What materials are used to build your 3D Wooden maps?

Accepted Answer

All our 3D wooden maps are made from a high-quality Hoop Pine plywood manufactured in Australia with a high grade “A” face and a multiply core. The plywood is sourced from sustainable FSC certified suppliers. The top layer is plywood painted white to provide a clean and contemporary look.   Each piece of wood used to create your map has its own unique characteristics, resulting in slight variations in appearance compared to the maps pictured on our website.

How do you make and frame your wooden maps?

Accepted Answer

Each map's contoured layers are crafted using CO2 lasers, before being hand assembled. Each layer of plywood shows a layer of water depth between 1-100m, depending on the map. White plywood provides a geographically accurate land layer. This keeps the design simple and clean to allow a focus on the coastline and the depths of the ocean.  ​​ ​For A4 and A3 sized maps we use 7 layers of plywood to represent the land and sea levels. On the smaller A5 sized maps 5 layers of plywood are used to avoid overcrowding the smaller frame.  To display and protect your map, we use a premium matte white box picture frame with 2mm clear glass. The frame includes a hanger suitable for all wall types in the hanging orientation of the map.

How do I order a custom design?

Please follow the link to the custom 3D wooden map request page to provide us with some initial information on what you’d like to capture in your map.   We will then be in touch to discuss the design so that it always reminds you of your special time, place or journey.     Alternatively, please contact us directly through: admin@carteblanchemaps.com

How long does it take to create a 3D wooden map?

Accepted Answer

All maps are made to order.  For pre-designed maps, we aim to make and ship within three business days of receiving your order.   For custom designs, we will be in touch to discuss within 1 business day of receiving your initial request.

Pre-designed maps can be ordered in three different sizes:   A3 - 45 x 32 cm including frame  A4 – 32 x 24 cm including frame  A5 – 24 x 18 cm including frame  ​​ If you would like to discuss ordering a pre-designed map but in a different size to suit your space, please contact us through the contact page, or directly through admin@carteblanchemaps.com  ​ Custom maps can be tailored to any size. We are happy to discuss as part of the design process.

Are your wooden maps handmade?

Accepted Answer

All our wooden maps are handmade and assembled in our small workshop in Tasmania.   As we use wood and natural materials to create our maps, there may be small variations in the grain or texture of the finished product, small blemishes or discolourations.

How long does it take to ship my wooden map?

Accepted Answer

Maps are shipped with Australia Post, who advise the following shipping times:   AUS - 3 to 5 business days  USA - 5 to 9 business days  NZ / CA / EU / UK - 4 to 12 business days  We ship for free to Australia.
